Review & Swatches: Maybelline One by One Volum’Express Mascara (regular)

Maybelline One by One Volum’Express Mascara

Price: varies, but usually $6-8
Availability: Drugstores, Target, Wal-Mart
Size: 0.3 fl. oz. / 0.9 ml

One by One is a newly released mascara by Maybelline.  The packaging claims that the mascara gives you “instant clump-free volume” with its “lash by lash brush.”  The mascara is available in regular and waterproof formulas and in the colors Brownish Black, Very Black, and Blackest Black.  The regular formula has a neon coral brush while the waterproof formula has a neon blue brush.

Packaging: 9/10
This mascara comes in a wide tube.  And because the tube is an eye-catching neon coral color, you’ll be able to find it even in a bag full of makeup.  The tube for One by One is the same shape as Maybelline’s Colossal and Falsies mascara tubes.

Quality: 9/10
This mascara applies well, giving you a natural effect with one coat, and building up to a dramatic effect with more coats.  The formula is not dry or watery.

True to Maybelline’s claims, this mascara is pretty much clump-free.  Even after 2-3 layers, my eyelashes did not clump together.  The mascara definitely made my lashes stand out, but I don’t see my lashes getting a lot of volume.  The volumizing effect is fine, but isn’t anything special.

This mascara wears well.  I did not see flaking or smudging even after several hours of wear.

Ease of Use: 9/10
The brush is a very good size–big enough to make applying easy, but not so big that you get mascara all over your eye.  It is a rubber brush and shaped like a football, which is good for defining your lashes and applying the product effectively.

Price: 9/10
This is a very good mascara, especially for one that is under $10.  Individual makeup items usually cost less if you purchase them at Wal-Mart or Target, but drugstores have sales each week that can make it cheaper to buy multiple items of the same brand.  So if you want to buy 2 or more Maybelline products in one purchase, check out your local drugstore’s weekly circular.  There will most likely be a sale for Maybelline products (buy-one-get-one half off or buy-one-get-one free).

This product has just been released in the U.S. and is not yet available on Maybelline’s website.

Toss if: you want a very dramatic effect

  1. I usually use a waterproof mascara because it holds a curl better than just regular! I’m glad they offered this mascara in both formulations 🙂

The wand looks very interesting, I’m gonna give this a try.

Would you say you like this one more or less than the Colossal. I like the look of this mascara but I really don’t like the Colossal (I don’t really remember why though haha).

Colossal gives you more volume than this mascara. Colossal is actually one of my favorites for more dramatic looks. You may not have liked it if it clumped up on you. One by One gives you more definition and length than it does volume, so it’s a mascara I would feel comfortable wearing in the daytime.

Helpful review! I love the Volum Express line (I usually use The Colossal), but haven’t tried this one yet.
