Review: Lavanila Healthy Deodorant in Vanilla Grapefruit

Lavanila’s Healthy Deodorant line contains 6 scents: Vanilla Coconut, Pure Vanilla, Vanilla Grapefruit, Vanilla Blossom, Vanilla Lavender, and Vanilla Passion Fruit. This review focuses on the deodorant in Vanilla Grapefruit.

These deodorants can be purchased at and Sephora for $18.00 each.

Company’s Description

This All-Natural, freshly scented deodorant provides superior, long-lasting odor protection. Soothing essential oils blend with powerful anti-oxidants and beta glucan technology for daily defense & nourishment. Clinically Tested. Dermatologist Recommended. No Aluminum. No Paraben. No Propylene Glycol. No Harsh Chemicals.

Packaging: 9/10

These deodorants come in a cylindrical plastic container with a twist-off top. The bottom of the cylinder twists, allowing you to expose more of the product as you use it up.

The tops go on securely, so you don’t need to worry about getting deodorant everywhere if you take this traveling. The packaging is a little bulky, though this is true for any full-sized deodorant or antiperspirant.

Quality: 8.75/10

Vanilla Grapefruit is exactly what this deodorant smells like. You get a sweet scent of grapefruit that is mellowed by a warmer vanilla scent. I am fairly sensitive to smells, but this deodorant has a wonderful, non-offensive scent to it. It is not overly sweet and doesn’t smell overwhelmingly like vanilla.

The scent is very long-lasting. What I love the most about this deodorant is that it doesn’t contain any alcohol. Most deodorants on the market are alcohol-based. Alcohol temporarily kills odor-causing bacteria but can also be very irritating to your skin. This deodorant is great to use after you’ve shaved and your skin is sensitive or has cuts in it. With an alcohol-based product, you will further irritate the skin and cause redness. With a deodorant like this, you won’t.

The only negative about this product is that it doesn’t go on clear. If you use this deodorant, make sure you’re wearing a shirt that completely covers your underarms or a tank top that doesn’t touch your underarm area. Otherwise, you’ll end up with unattractive white marks on your clothing.

Ease of Use: 10/10

Nothing much to it. Put it on and get out the door!

Price: 8/10

This deodorant is unquestionably on the expensive side. You can get a lot of deodorants at the drugstore for under $5. That said, this is a “natural” brand, and natural brands tend to cost more. Also, it’s worth paying more to avoid the irritating alcohol ingredient.

Toss if: you want a deodorant you can wear with any outfit without worrying about marks
Try if: you want a “natural” deodorant
Buy if: you want a deodorant that won’t irritate your skin just after shaving

Have you tried other natural deodorants like Tom’s or the crystal ones you find in organic and/or health-food and/or vitamin stores?

I’ve used up one Tom’s before. I didn’t like it because it didn’t really dry. Though, the up-side was that it went on clear. The scent wasn’t durable throughout the day. This one is.

I’ve been wanting to try the LaVanilla deodorant but the cost has had me a little iffy. I think I’ll have to see if I can get this one as a christmas gift-lol Is there a less expensive natural deodorant that you could suggest in the meantime?

thanks for sharing. i’m in an endless search for a perfect deodorant without aluminium. haven’t found the right one yet. i’m actually thinking about making one myself. the last one “natural” i tried was from lush, based on soda bicarbona – it was ok but too messy for applying so i thought i could make that myself practically for free.

off topic: is it possible to subscribe to the comments on posts I comment? I sometimes forget to check for potential answers or other comments. 🙂

      Hi Masa,
I’ve added a feature that lets you choose to get email updates when people reply to your comments. When you go to post a comment, there’s a box you can check at the bottom that lets you get email updates.
Thanks for pointing that out. I think a lot of people would like to have that option!
