Review & Swatches: MAC Semi-Precious MSFs

MAC Semi-Precious Mineralize Skinfinishes

This review covers MAC’s 4 Semi-Precious Mineralize Skinfinishes.

  • Semi-Precious Pearl: beige champagne base with inner circle of white, plum, bronze (limited edition)
  • Semi-Precious Crystal Pink: pink champagne base with inner circle of pink, mid-tone green, bronze (limited edition)
  • Semi-Precious Rose Quartz: rosy pink base with inner circle of silver, lime, white-pink copper (limited edition)
  • Semi-Precious Goldstone: brown base with rosy pink, white, and gold inner circle (limited edition)

Please see this post and YouTube video for more photos and swatches of these lipsticks.

Packaging: 9/10

These MSFs come in standard MAC packaging. The compacts are plastic with flip-up, snap-shut lids.

These MSFs are different from regular MSFs in design. They have a base color and a circle in the middle of the pan that contains various other colors.

Quality: 8.5/10

I have mixed feelings about these MSFs. On one hand, if you apply them heavily (with a dense brush or when swatching them with my finger), the pigmentation is good and colors are very pretty. On the other hand, when you swirl the inner circle with the base color together using a blush brush, you get shimmer with very subtle color. If you’re looking for a highlighter, these fit the bill. But if you’re looking for shimmer with clear, distinct color, you have to really layer these MSFs.

The shimmer is a little gritty, but it isn’t as bad as with Soft & Gentle, which is permanent in the MSF line and has quite unflatteringly large shimmers in it.

Ease of Use: 8.5/10

You’ll need to apply several layers to get distinct color from the pan. If you’re just looking for simple highlighting, simply apply with a small fluffy brush.

Price: 8.25/10

These are standard MSF price ($28.00) and size (6.5 g). Although these MSFs look beautiful in the pan and give you plenty of product, $28.00 is still a bit much to pay for something that, effectively, is simply a highlighter.

Thanks for the honest review. These look so pretty in the container, I’d be tempted to buy them outright. I’ll definitely try them on with a discriminating eye.

That’s REALLY disappointing that there is grittiness; and I was hoping for stronger color without having to really work at it and layer; too bad the inner circle isn’t the whole thing! Instead it seems we have just another highlighter…that said, your pictures of Crystal Pink and Pearl applied as highlighters make them look beautiful nonetheless, and it does show that they are distinctly different. If you had to choose one, which one would you say is the best?
