Review & Swatches: Milani Lip Flash Pencils

This review covers 2 Milani Lip Full Coverage Shimmer Gloss Pencils in Photo Flash and Star Flash. Each pencil retails for around $6-$7.

Company’s Description

The electric lip look is defined with highly pigmented flashy shimmer colors. Create news worthy lips with extra glossy, high color coverage and moisture rich ingredients. A sharpenable, easy to use, anti-feathering and nontacky lip gloss pencil.

Packaging: 9/10

These lip colors come in pencil form and have a clear, plastic, slide-off top. The packaging for each is colored in the same color as the product.

Quality: 8/10

These pencils are extremely glittery and have medium pigmentation. The red pencil (Photo Flash) goes on smoothly, but the light pink pencil (Star Flash) goes on unevenly and clumps up in patches of glitter. Star Flash is also not as soft as Photo Flash and is also much too pale for most skin colors. The glitters in both colors are pretty large/chunky. Neither is sticky or tacky.

Both pencils smell like crayons. You also need to be careful with the glitter. It can get very messy, especially if you try to remove the color. The glitter sticks and smears, so you might need to remove with an oil-based remover to get off all the glitter.

I think my biggest criticism is that I don’t think these pencils are very wearable. They are intense and extremely glittery, with noticeable chunks of glitter. They might work for a holiday look, but I don’t see them being used for everyday looks.

Ease of Use: 8.5/10

Star Flash doesn’t go on as evenly as Photo Flash and it’s hard to not get patches of glitter with Star Flash. Otherwise, it’s not complicated to use these pencils. But they are a mess to remove, so I’d suggest using an oil-based remover.

Price: 8/10

$6-7 isn’t a lot, but you can get NYX Jumbo Lipstick Pencils for $4.50. On the other hand, drugstores will have sales on Milani products once in a while, so you may be able to get one for $3-4 if you wait for the sales. Overall, they’re a decent, but not great price.

Toss if: you want pencils for everyday-wear
Try: Photo Flash–Star Flash is difficult to use and an unflattering color
Buy if: you like lots of glitter

Pretty disappointing — I really like a lot of Milani’s products, especially their eye pencils, which I think are probably the best on the market, including more expensive brands.

  2. Emmy says:

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with lip pencils! It’s too bad that these aren’t as good, I guess I’ll stick to Eyeko, haha.

  3. Zana says:

Okay, I appreciate your honesty in reviewing these lipstick pencils (?) They look kinda greasy and patchy to me so…I think Imma pass on them. I really like alot of Milani’s regular lip glosses better than some of my MAC ones

Star flash looks so pretty, but I don’t like photo flash. Photo flash look like it should be a highlighter.
