This is a review for OPI’s new Pirates of the Caribbean collection “On Stranger Tides.” The collection will be available at select stores.
“OPI is thrilled to celebrate the latest film in this beloved series. ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ lacquers were inspired by a world filled with mythical mermaids, gleaming treasure and high-seas adventure. With shades ranging from sage and lavender to khaki gray and pastel pink, these colors are evocative of a warm, tropical setting, with a classic nautical influence.”
–Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP and Artistic Director
These polishes come in classic OPI bottles. The brushes and handles are both of medium length, which makes application easy. The brush is flat, which also helps with application.
This collection has 3 nude-y colors (Skull & Glossbones, Steady as She Rose, Stranger Tides) and 3 bright colors (Sparrow Me the Drama, Planks a Lot, Mermaid’s Tears). OPI’s Silver Shatter polish is also part of this collection. I much prefer the nude colors, not because there is anything wrong with the brights, but because the 3 bright colors are much less unique.
Skull & Glossbones is a pale, dirty grey; Steady as She Rose is a light, dusty pink; Stranger Tides is a light, greyish green. These colors look dull in the bottle, but make for great neutral shades when they’re actually on the nails.
Sparrow Me the Drama is a blue-based pink; Planks a Lot is a medium purple; Mermaid’s Tears is an almost-Tiffany green. This trio of colors reminds me of the 3 polish colors released with MAC’s Quite Cute Collection. There are a lot of pinks/purples/greens like these out there.
I’m not a fan of shatter polishes, but of all the ones I’ve tried, Silver Shatter is my favorite. It’s very glittery and “crackles” well.
You will need to apply 2 layers with each of the other colors, but otherwise the color payoff is solid and the polish formula applies smoothly.
Ease of Use: 9/10
You should use 2 coats of each color to get an even and opaque finish. The length of the handle and the brushes make application controlled and easy. For the shatter polish, make sure to apply a thin layer–resist the temptation to layer or apply it thickly.
You get 15 ml of product for $8.50 each. This price is comparable to the cost of other high-end nail polishes from companies like China Glaze and Essie.
Try if: you’re a Pirates of the Caribbean fan–may as well splurge on this collection, right?
Buy if: you want both bright and muted colors
