Every year, the International Makeup-Up Artist Trade Show is held in 6 locations around the world. I have attended the past 2 shows in Pasadena, California.
The trade show is a lot of fun: there are seminars from experienced speakers in the industry, a student competition that exhibits amazing makeup work, and (most peoples’ favorite part) tons of makeup booths where you can purchase items at a discount. There is always a large turn-out, so you get to mingle with others who love makeup.
But it can also be stressful managing the schedule of seminars, navigating which of the dozens of booths to go to, and being crammed in between 100 other people who want to buy the same lipstick you do! So here are 5 tips I’d like to share for keeping your IMATS experience positive and minimally stressful.
1: Arrive early. The doors open around 8:30 AM, but there will already be a long line of people waiting by that time. So get to the location early (I’d suggest 8:00 AM) to avoid a long wait-time.
2: Research beforehand. There are dozens of exhibitors to choose from. Go the the IMATS website to see which companies will be at the show. Write down which booths you’re interested in going to. Do the same for the classes and events.
3: Rank your list. Rank the booths according to your level of interest. The more popular booths will have large, usually unorganized crowds around them and you can end up waiting up to 2 hours to make a purchase. Make Up For Ever, MAC, NYX, and Inglot are always crowded, with MUFE having the most extreme wait times. If you are only going for one of the days, make sure you know which booths are a priority and which booths you can live without. Remember that there are classes, seminars, and events going on in various rooms in the building too. Put those on your list so that you don’t get caught up shopping and miss them.
4: Wear comfortable shoes. You will be standing for hours. I know many people want to look fashionable at events like this, but you might regret slipping on that pair of 4-inch stilettos after the third hour of waiting in line.
5: Bring a bag. This tip isn’t a must if you don’t plan to buy a lot. But if you’re planning to stock up on makeup, you might prefer to carry around a sturdy bag of your own. You’d be surprised how heavy all the items can get and how tiring it can be to carry it around the whole day. IMATS will give you a pretty large paper shopping bag that you can use for your purchases, but it’s not comfortable to hang on your arm or wrist. Bring your own large, cloth bag that’s comfortable to carry if you’re planning to go on a shopping spree.
If you have any other questions about IMATS, please feel free to ask. I’m happy to share my experiences and advice on navigating the show.
And please let us know if you’ll be at the Los Angeles trade show this year! I’d love to hear from you.
