This flat brush is designed to use for contouring, sculpting and blending. Ideal for a controlled application of highlighting, brightening & bronzing powders.
Sonia Kashuk’s Flat-Top Sculpting Brush is designed for contouring and sculpting. Here are my thoughts on the quality of the brush, along with photos.
This is a wide, flat-top brush made with short bristles. The brush measures about 1 3/4 inches across and is a little less than 1/2 inch thick. The bristles are densely-packed, which, combined with their short length, makes this brush stiff.
The lack of flexibility in this brush makes it ideal for creating sharp, precise lines in narrow areas. You can use the brush to “blend” out a powder, but not by moving it in a traditional buffing motion. Instead, you’ll drag the brush up and down to soften any powder you’ve applied with this brush.
The bristles for this brush are neither scratchy nor soft. It’s a great brush to apply contouring powders under the cheekbone and highlighting powder on the top of the cheekbone. It’s also great for applying contouring powder on the sides of the nose and highlighting powder down the center of the nose because of its narrowness.
I did find blending powders to be a little awkward with this brush because of its dense bristles and lack of flexibility. You can achieve “blending” by swiping the brush up and down, but you might prefer to go over the powder with a round brush instead.
Some of the bristles did shed during my first use of the brush (about 2 hairs). The brush washes well, though, without bleeding or shedding.
$13.00 is a very reasonable price for a high-quality brush like this. The shape of the brush is pretty unique–you won’t find anything like it among other drugstore brands. And the price is much more affordable, even compared to a brand like Sephora.
