Company’s Description
This mascara features an exclusive brush specially designed to maximize the performance of the long-wearing, glossy formula revealing lashes you never knew you had! Staggered bristles grab close to the root, boosting length and volume beyond belief. The precision bristles on the custom-domed tip lift, define, and curl even your tiniest lashes. The end result is luxurious, silky lashes that won’t smudge, clump, or dry out.
Benefit’s They’re Real! mascara comes in one shade (Black) and is said to give your lashes length and volume without smudging, clumping, or drying out. Keep reading for my thoughts on this mascara.
Packaging: 9/10
This mascara comes in a steel grey tube. The brush has plastic bristles shaped in the form of sharp spikes. I must say, it looks like a medieval clobbering weapon…
Quality: 8/10
This mascara has a medium-thin formula that isn’t watery. The color is dark black.
My lashes get definition and some length out of this mascara, but no volume. I can apply two (2) coats to get a little thickness from the product, but if I apply more coats than that, the mascara clumps up and begins to look too spidery.
The mascara doesn’t flake or smudge through the day.
I’m not too impressed by this mascara. I appreciate that it tints my lashes (which all mascaras should) and defines them, doesn’t smudge and doesn’t flake, but it just doesn’t do anything special for the lashes and doesn’t give them any volume.
Ease of Use: 8.75/10
The only thing special about using this mascara is that you need to be slow and careful with application. I’ve gotten too close to the lash line a couple of times and the bristles poked my eye, causing a lot of pain. The bristles on this brush are very sharp, so be careful!
Price: 8.75/10
For $23.00 you get 0.3 ounces of product. Benefit’s BADGal Lash Mascara costs $19.00 and contains the same amount. Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes! costs $19.00 and contains 0.24 ounces. Too Faced’s Lashgasm Mascara costs $21.00 and contains 0.4 ounces.

ahahah I’ve hurt myself several times with the applicator of this mascara ^__^’ and They are real did nothing special on me too…
It need a warning label: Do not get clobbering weapon close to eyes.
I’m glad someone else has the same feelings I do about this mascara! I paid $10 for the tiny travel-size at Sephora and was pretty underwhelmed. I think drugstore mascaras, especially the L’oréal Voluminous Millions (which I know not everyone is a fan of) and Rimmel’s Sexy Curves give you a much bigger bang for your buck when it comes to approximating false eyelashes. I also really like Tarina Tarantino’s Fleur de Lash at a higher price point.
I agree. I use Voluminous and Sexy Curves regularly. And while I don’t think they give anything close to a false lash look (honestly, what mascara does?), they give a much thicker effect than this mascara.
Is there a cheaper alternative for natural looking mascara?
I think I have enough volume and length and I just need them to stay curled and a bit defined, the mascaras I’ve tried make my lashes look to dramatic for natural/daytime looks
My favorite is Maybelline Full n Soft. For natural curl/definition, also try Rimmel’s Sexy Curves.
