Exude sells 9 shades of its Lip Creme and 5 shades of Lip Gloss. This review is for the Exude Lip Gloss in Scarlet Red.
This lip product comes in a white, plastic tube. When you pull off the top, the actual color is housed in a clear plastic applicator that is shaped the way a new lipstick would be. The surface of the slanted, plastic applicator has ridges on it and an opening through which the product dispenses when you twist the bottom of the tube.
There are advantages and disadvantages to this packaging. It’s convenient to have a lip gloss you can apply without having to pull a wand from the tube and re-dip for application. The disadvantage is that it’s difficult to tell how much product is dispensing from the tube. As a result, it’s hard to control the amount of product you’re applying.
Scarlet Red is a red with a bit of burgundy in it. The color is translucent and has pink and gold shimmers.
While the color is pigmented, its translucent finish dilutes the red color such that it ends up looking more pink on the lips. The translucent finish also emphasizes lip lines: the red pigment settles into the lines, leaving an unflattering effect. Although the application was also a little streaky, it wasn’t as bad as with Exude’s Lip Creme in Coral.
The formula is thin, moisturizing, and non-sticky. I found this color only lasted an hour before I wanted to add more product onto the lips.
Ease of Use: 8/10
Because of the packaging, it can be difficult to measure how much product you’re applying to your lips. I found myself applying some product, twisting the base to reveal more product, and applying it again 3-4 times.
It’s also a bit of a hassle to work with this color, due to the way it emphasizes lip lines and the bit of streakiness you get when applying it. You can’t do much about the lip-lines, other than put a lipstick underneath first. The streakiness you can ameliorate with careful application and some layering.
