Company’s Description

Liquid, creamy, consistent, ultra-pigmented and velvety, Rouge G L’Extrait exceptional lip color is the perfect cross between a lipstick and a gloss. The liquid texture glides gently over the lip and within a few moments, the silky color becomes matte. This non-sticky, non-drying, and non-feathering texture leaves your lips looking flawless for hours.

Guerlain’s new Rouge G De Guerlain L’Extrait lip gloss comes in seven (7) different shades. This review is for the shade Gourmandise (French for “gluttony”)–a bright pink with a tint of coral.

Packaging: 10/10

This is probably the most luxurious packaging you’ll come across. The lipgloss comes in a heavy, metal, bullet-shaped tube. You pull back the handle, then twist to reveal a doe-foot applicator. The metal does easily get finger prints on it, but you can thankfully wipe them away. Part of the packaging also flips open to reveal a mirror.

Quality: 9.75/10

Gourmandise is an opaque, strong color that leaves a slightly glossy shine to the lips. Though the color is opaque, the texture of your lips still shows through so that it doesn’t look mask-like. This shade does leave some subtle streakiness, so it’s not quite as smooth as this lip gloss in Orgueil. The shade does not include any shimmer.

The formula is thin, creamy, and silky. It’s not sticky or tacky like some lip glosses are. The formula dries to a finish more akin to a lipstick, leaving a somewhat water- and smudge-resistant layer of color. Guerlain says the dried finish is matte, but I found there was still a sheen to the color, even after drying. The formula doesn’t dry out the lips.

This lip gloss is extremely long-wearing. The vibrancy of the color stays exactly the same for over three (3) hours, with no fading, though the color does start to bleed slightly at the edges after two (2) hours of wear. Though the color will transfer if you are eating/drinking/kissing, the formula is much more robust compared to normal lip glosses and lipsticks. I went a total of six (6) hours wearing this gloss before I felt like touching it up! And that was with light drinking and eating. The shade does start to settle a little into the lip-lines by the third/fourth hour of wear.

Also, this shade leaves a very strong stain behind on the lips. Even if I remove this gloss before going to bed, there is still a noticeable pink tint to my lips when I wake up the next morning.

The product has a very slightly sweet smell, but I only noticed it because I deliberately sniffed it for testing purposes. I don’t think I would have noticed it otherwise, and it certainly didn’t bother me while I was wearing the gloss.

Overall, I’m very impressed by the vibrancy of this color, the comfortable-wearing formula, and its longevity. If you’re going to spend a big buck on a lip gloss, the Rouge G De Guerlain L’Extrait should definitely be a contender on your list.

Ease of Use: 9/10

The formula glides across the lips without having to tug, press, or even blend or layer. But, due to the opaque and intense nature of the color, you do have to apply very slowly and carefully at the edges of the lips. It’s easy to get an uneven border, so opting to apply the gloss with a lip brush might be best. You may also need to go along the edges of the lips with concealer.

Price: 8.5/10

For $48.00 you get 0.2 ounces of gloss. Givenchy’s Gelée D’Interdit Smoothing Gloss costs $27.50 and contains 0.21 ounces. YSL’s Rouge Pur Coutures costs $32.00 and contains 0.2 ounces. Ellis Faas’ Glazed Lips cost $35.00 and contain 0.095 ounces. There’s no question that this gloss is expensive, even compared to other luxury brands. But this is a rare instance in which part of the price goes to luxurious packaging made of high-end materials. It’s not just a plastic tube with a fancy logo on it!

Oooh, that color is beautiful! I haven’t tried this one yet. I bought two Rouge G de Guerlain Jewel Lipstick Compact in Girly and Gigolo, and I love them! Can’t wait to try one of these.

  3. Cindy says:

The color is absolutely gorgeous!! But the price is killing me.

  4. Elena T says:

the packaging is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen! but it’s definitely pricey!

  5. Magi says:

I’m VERY surprised about the A rating. I have the same shade and I don’t think it’s a bad product but the quality is more “average” and pretty similar to $4.99 products. I was super disappointed with this purchase.

    • Allura says:

Wow! I love mine. :( I was also stunned how strongly it stained my lips, which I really like in a gloss/lipstick.
What’d you find was average about it?
