Laura Mercier Lip Stain provides the visual effect of a stain with the comfort and sheen of a lip gloss. Long-lasting, with a balmy satin finish, it leaves lips looking effortlessly polished with a subtle sophistication. Dermatologist tested.
Laura Mercier’s Lip Stains come in 4 different shades and are said to give the qualities of a stain with the sheen of a gloss. This review is for the shade Shy Pink–a light, natural pink color.
Laura Mercier’s Lip Stains come in glass jars with twist-off lids. I’m not a huge fan of having to dip my finger into a jar, since doing so introduces bacteria to the lip product. But the packaging is otherwise sleek and elegant.
Shy Pink is an extremely wearable, natural shade of pink. It’s close to the color of my natural lips, but has a silvery sheen that is quite unique while still being subtle. I wouldn’t say that the stain leaves a gloss-like finish, though.
The formula is quite dry and stiff in the pot. It’s not drying, but it’s not emollient or moisturizing. The lack of moisture is what makes the product adhere to the skin.
After you’ve applied this shade, it doesn’t really feel like you have anything on your lips and feels the way your lips would feel if they didn’t have any lip balm on them. If your lips are naturally dry, you will need to apply a balm on top.
Unlike a marker or water-based stain, this product doesn’t skin into the skin. As a result, it doesn’t last as long as those types of stains do. Shy Pink lasts about 2-3 hours on my lips if I’m not drinking anything. You can greatly extend the life of this stain by keeping a clear balm applied on top.
In the end, I really like the effortless way this color enhances my natural lip shade, but I wish the “stain” lasted longer.
Ease of Use: 8.75/10
The balm takes a bit of warming up and it does drag a bit on the lips. But application is otherwise straight-forward. I’d suggest using your fingers (even though it’s less sanitary than a clean brush) to bring heat to the product.
For $20.00 you get 0.21 ounces of product. It’s rare to find a lip stain in this form (they’re usually pencils or markers). Compared to other lip balms that come in a pot, you get the same amount of product for the price.
