A soft, lightweight, springy formula delivers hue-rich colour in a modern mode. One touch and you’ll be wired into its sensational blending power. Medium-to-high coverage transforms eyes. Use the 249 Large Shader Brush to provide pro-quality pick-up and distribution.
MAC’s Electric Cool Collection introduces a new eye shadow formula in 12 limited edition shades. This review is for the shade Blacklit, which MAC describes as a black with multidimensional pearl.
Unlike MAC’s standard powder shadows, the Electric Cool shadows come in a slightly glossier compact with a twist-off lid.
Blacklit is a black with multi-colored shimmer.
MAC claims that this formula is soft, lightweight, and springy. The consistency is similar to Maybelline’s Dream Bouncy Blushes. The shadow is soft to the touch, like a pillow. It will deform under the pressure of a brush.
MAC also claims the color will be hue-rich and gives medium-to-high coverage. Unfortunately, this isn’t true for Blacklit. It doesn’t apply opaquely, even after layering. There actually isn’t much of a difference in how the color looks when applied to bare skin versus over a primer. Blacklit looks patchy on the skin and doesn’t have the level of intensity you’d want out of a pitch-black shadow. The shadow started to crease after 3 hours without a primer. I didn’t have a problem with creasing when using the shade over a primer. But I did have a problem with some fading of the color, regardless of whether it was over a primer or not. This fading emphasizes the already-patchy finish the color leaves.
Finally, MAC states that the shadow has “sensational” blending power. This shade doesn’t blend very well because of its patchy quality.
Ease of Use: 8/10
You have to be careful with this color when blending it into the crease. You simultaneously can’t apply too much at once because it looks unflattering but also have to apply multiple layers because it looks patchy. The best way to make this color look good is to apply it over a black base.
MAC’s standard eye shadows cost $15.00 and contain 1.5 grams of product. The Electric Cool shadows cost $18.50 and contain 2.1 (0.07 ounces) of shadow. Despite the higher price, you’re getting a better deal with the Electric Cool shadows because of the amount of product you get.
