A soft, lightweight, springy formula delivers hue-rich colour in a modern mode. One touch and you’ll be wired into its sensational blending power. Medium-to-high coverage transforms eyes. Use the 249 Large Shader Brush to provide pro-quality pick-up and distribution.
MAC’s Electric Cool Collection introduces a new eye shadow formula in 12 limited edition shades. This review is for the shade Coil, which MAC describes as a copper bronze.
Unlike MAC’s standard powder shadows, the Electric Cool shadows come in a slightly glossier compact with a twist-off lid.
Coil is a chocolate brown with copper micro-shimmer that, overall, makes the brown lean warm.
MAC claims that this formula is soft, lightweight, and springy. The consistency is similar to Maybelline’s Dream Bouncy Blushes. The shadow is soft to the touch, like a pillow. It will deform under the pressure of a brush.
MAC also claims the color will be hue-rich and gives medium-to-high coverage. The color pay-off is good for Coil and it can be built up to medium coverage with an additional layer. I don’t see it giving off opaque, high coverage though.
Finally, MAC states that the shadow has “sensational” blending power. I actually found that Coil didn’t blend out as easily as many of the other Electric Cool colors. It resists smooth blending more, so you have to take more time when working it into the crease.
The color is strong and vibrant even without a primer. But it did start to crease after 1 hour of wear when applied to bare skin. The use of a primer underneath alleviated the early creasing, and made the shadow last about 4 hours before it began to crease.
The most interesting thing about Coil is its multi-dimensional nature. You can see in the photo, below, that it flashes slightly different browns depending on how thick of a layer you’ve applied and depending on the light that hits the color. In the crease, it looked cooler-toned than on the lid, even though I used only the one color. This is the kind of shade you can use for a cohesive eye look that appears like you used more than just the single shade.
Ease of Use: 8.75/10
Coil applies vibrantly and evenly, except for in the crease area, which requires just a little more work than some of the other Electric Cool shadow colors.
MAC’s standard eye shadows cost $15.00 and contain 1.5 grams of product. The Electric Cool shadows cost $18.50 and contain 2.1 (0.07 ounces) of shadow. Despite the higher price, you’re getting a better deal with the Electric Cool shadows because of the amount of product you get.
