MAC’s Electric Cool Collection introduces a new eye shadow formula in 12 limited edition shades. This review is for the shade Electroplate, which MAC describes as a cool, gunmetal grey.
Unlike MAC’s standard powder shadows, the Electric Cool shadows come in a slightly glossier compact with a twist-off lid.
Electroplate is a medium, slightly metallic silver. The color has good pigmentation but gives off more intense color and a higher silver sheen when applied over a primer.
MAC claims that this formula is soft, lightweight, and springy. The consistency is similar to Maybelline’s Dream Bouncy Blushes. The shadow is soft to the touch, like a pillow. It will deform under the pressure of a brush.
MAC also claims the color will be hue-rich and gives medium-to-high coverage. This description is pretty accurate for this shade. Without a primer, you’ll get up-to-medium coverage; over a primer, you can get a more opaque finish.
Finally, MAC states that the shadow has “sensational” blending power. The formula for Electroplate resists the blending process a little, so you’ll spend more time working it into the crease area than normal. But it’s by no means un-workable.
The color began to crease very slightly after the first hour of wear when applied to bare skin. The color also fades after 1.5 hours of wear. Using a primer underneath keeps the color vibrant throughout the day. It also makes the shadow resists creasing for an additional 2 hours, so that creasing starts after about 3.5 hours. This wear-time is a little disappointing, especially since many of the other Electroplate shadows wear much longer over a primer without creasing.
Ease of Use: 8.75/10
Electroplate applies with decently vibrant color. There is no fall-out, but you will spend additional time blending the color in the crease.
MAC’s standard eye shadows cost $15.00 and contain 1.5 grams of product. The Electric Cool shadows cost $18.50 and contain 2.1 (0.07 ounces) of shadow. Despite the higher price, you’re getting a better deal with the Electric Cool shadows because of the amount of product you get.
