MAC’s Electric Cool Collection introduces a new eye shadow formula in 12 limited edition shades. This review is for the shade Infra-Violet, which MAC describes as a mid-tone pink violet with blue pearl.
Unlike MAC’s standard powder shadows, the Electric Cool shadows come in a slightly glossier compact with a twist-off lid.
Infra-Violet is a bright, electric, hot magenta color with tiny light purple/blue shimmer particles.
MAC claims that this formula is soft, lightweight, and springy. The consistency is similar to Maybelline’s Dream Bouncy Blushes. The shadow is soft to the touch, like a pillow. It will deform under the pressure of a brush.
MAC also claims the color will be hue-rich and gives medium-to-high coverage. This description is spot-on. The color is wonderfully vibrant, even when you don’t use a base underneath (the photo, below, is the color applied without a primer underneath). The coverage is also medium-high. On the medium side, there is very slight patchiness, but you can really only see it up-close. If you apply additional layers, you can get more opaque coverage.
Finally, MAC states that the shadow has “sensational” blending power. I don’t know about “sensational,” but the color does blend nicely.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that, even without primer underneath, Infra-Violet didn’t crease, even after the several hours! The color did fade in the crease area (as if the shadow was moving away from the crease), starting after the first hour and a half when applied directly to the skin. A primer or base keeps this effect at bay for about 2 hours longer than without primer.
As a side-note, you can use this color as a blush! It’s not the best formula for doing so, but with some blending and layering, you can definitely multi-task this color.
Ease of Use: 9/10
Infra-Violet applies with intense color. The shade doesn’t apply completely evenly at the start, but with a few more swipes of the brush, the color goes even. Pressing the shadow with a flat, dense brush in short strokes helps to get a more effective application. The color blends nicely and doesn’t produce fall-out.
MAC’s standard eye shadows cost $15.00 and contain 1.5 grams of product. The Electric Cool shadows cost $18.50 and contain 2.1 (0.07 ounces) of shadow. Despite the higher price, you’re getting a better deal with the Electric Cool shadows because of the amount of product you get.
