These Eye Kits come in rounded-square compacts that are decorated with a bow at the lid’s closure point. The tops of the compacts look like pillows and are squishy to the touch. The compact folds open to reveal five (5) eye shadows, a small brush, and a mirror. The compacts are quite light.
Glamour Light is a fairly sheer cream color. Retrospeck is a slightly shimmery beige with decent pigmentation. Honesty is a light tan color made slightly purple because of pinkish-red-gold shimmer particles. Cognac is a well-pigmented golden brown shade. Sketch is a strongly pigmented, opaque burgundy shade.
All of the shades except for Sketch are shimmery. The most disappointing shades are Glamour Light and Honesty: Glamour Light barely shows on NC20 skin while Honesty consists mostly of gritty shimmer particles instead of an underlying color. Sketch is the stand-out shade of this kit, with its smooth quality and opaque finish. Cognac follows close behind with strong color and fairly even finish.
Blonde Mink is a weakly-pigmented grey with silver shimmer particles. Magical Mist is a better-pigmented taupe with silver shimmer particles. Brun is a buttery, strongly pigmented brown. Enviable is a shimmering, multi-dimensional mint green. Smut is a deep, pigmented charcoal grey.
Again, the two Lustre finish shades are the most disappointing in this kit: Blonde Mink and Magical Mist. They are gritty and weakly pigmented. Brun and Smut have strong color and more buttery formulas, but note that Smut takes a couple layers to get an even finish. Enviable is disappointing on the first layer, but actually gives a very interesting, more vibrant effect upon layering.
Taupeless is a pale, shimmering baby pink. Satin Taupe is a shimmering light brown. Love Spice is a pink-toned taupe shade. Spellcaster is a vibrant eggplant shade. Black Slip is a shimmering, deep plum.
This is the only kit with a matte shade–Spellcaster–which is wonderfully pigmented and smooth. Of the Luster formula shades, this kit has the best one–Taupeless–which has decent color pay-off once layered. The other colors, similarly, give impressive color and finish upon layering.
All three (3) of these kits are pretty equal in quality. They all contain a combination of less-than-impressive shades and pigmented, bold shades. Overall, the Lustre formula shades are gritty and lacking in vibrancy and color. The Satin and Matte formula shades are opaque, apply evenly, and give great color.
All the kits also include a mix of new and permanent/repromoted shades. If you are someone who is a long-time MAC customer, you aren’t getting the full value of these kits if you already have some of the non-new eyeshadow shades.
But if you are fairly new to MAC or want to give a gift to someone else, these kits offer a good mixture of different formulas, finishes, and colors.
The mini brushes in these kits are nothing to get excited about. They aren’t the greatest quality and are certainly not of the caliber of MAC’s full-sized brushes. But they will work in a pinch.
Ease of Use: 8.5/10
The Lustre shades need at least two (2) to three (3) layers. The non-shimmery shades apply the most smoothly.
I also wish the wells holding the shadows were bigger–especially the two (2) square ones. Some eye shadow brushes will be a little wider than the pans.
Each kit costs $39.50 and contains five (5) eyeshadow shades for a total of 0.14 ounces (4 grams). Single MAC shadows cost $15.00 and contain 0.05 ounces (1.5 grams). You actually get only slightly more product per dollar by buying these kits.
