Company’s Description

Colour plus texture for the lips. Stands out on the runway. Simmers on the street…or at sea! Packaged in blue and white stripes, it’s a match to everything Hey, Sailor!

This review is for the 4 limited-edition Lipstick colors releasing with MAC’s upcoming Hey, Sailor! Collection. This post includes photographs and swatches of the following colors:

  • Red Racer (Satin): Bright yellow red
  • To Catch a Sailor (Frost): Highly frosted tan
  • Salute! (Amplified): Neutral peach
  • Sail La Vie (Satin): Bright mid-tone orange

Packaging: 9/10

These lipsticks come in standard MAC packaging. The tubes are made of plastic and can easily be taken on-the-go. The tube is decorated with blue nautical stripes.

Quality: 9.5/10

Red Racer is a bright, classic, warm-toned red. The pigmentation is intense and opaque. The formula is creamy, emollient, and moisturizing.

To Catch a Sailor is a tan color with a silver frost finish. This color is also creamy, emollient, intense in pigmentation, and fairly moisturizing.

Salute! is a pale peach. The formula is creamy and emollient, but the pigmentation isn’t quite opaque or even.

Sail La Vie is an intensely-pigmented, opaque orange-based red. The formula is emollient and creamy.

These are impressive lipstick colors and formulas, with the exception of Salute!, which leaves a slightly streaky finish.

Ease of Use: 9.5/10

All 4 colors glide onto the lips easily due to their creamy formula. You do need to apply more precisely because of the intense colors.

Price: 9/10

Everything in the Hey, Sailor! collection is $1.00 more than normally-price MAC items because of the special limited-edition packaging.

Really want Sail La Vie. Love that name as well. So cute.

  2. Especially Lipstick in Salute looks gorgeous, thanks for the swatches.

  3. Elizabeth says:

Which color lipstick would be good for NC20 type skin?

    • Allura says:

There is no color that goes or doesn’t go with NC20 skin. It depends on your eye color, hair color, skin tone and shade, etc.

      • eurocentrix says:

A great comment, so many people base the color of their skin, when it really depend on the overall facial features and personal preference . For example, I am NC25 and quite yellow, but both warm and cool lipsticks suit be because although my skin is warm, I have very cool green/gray eyes, so both kind of work.. It’s more of a personal preference how people wish to appear and the look they are going for, then the shade of their skin that really matters..

  4. jenn says:

I always look forward to your swatches. can you think of any dupes for Sail La Vie?

  5. Fanny says:

    Sail la Vie is gorgeous!
    I want it! :)

  6. Skylar says:

Thanks for the swatches! I was wondering….I have really fair skin(like true match W1 Porcelain)….what lipstick color would you suggest? Just curious!

    • Allura says:

I don’t think there’s any one in particular that would or wouldn’t work. I can’t really say unless I actually see your skin color, eye color, hair color…
