Textile designer Vera Neumann’s brilliant colour palette is translated into a limited edition set of four stackable jars of Crushed Metallic Pigment. Highlights eyes or skin with a striking colour wave of blue reflective metallic sparkle.
This review is for the Crushed Metallic Pigment Set in “Butterfly Party” releasing with MAC’s upcoming Vera Collection. This post includes photographs and swatches of the following colors:
- Butterfly Party: Bright lilac
- Desert Cloud: Deep blue purple
- Rain Drop: Metallic teal
- Moss Garden: Metallic silver green
The pigments themselves are housed in clear plastic jars. The jars are stacked in pairs but you can mix-and-match them however you want to.
Butterfly Party is a medium violet purple. It has similar-sized glitters to Moon Rose from the Strawberry Patch set but doesn’t clump up as extensively.
Desert Cloud is a blue-based purple that applies very unevenly and clumps up. Even pressing the pigment into the brush and into the skin repeatedly doesn’t smooth out the finish. Just like with Moon Rose, this is a shame because Desert Cloud is a beautiful, unique color.
Rain Drop is a medium teal that applies unevenly dry, but performs infinitely better applied wet, giving a smooth, near-opaque finish.
Moss Garden is a pale silvery/grey moss that clumps when applied dry but smooths out a good deal when applied wet.
Ease of Use: 7.75/10
Although often times beautiful, Crushed Metallic Pigments are difficult to work with. They get glitter absolutely everywhere and the open-jar packaging only encourages you to get shimmers on your fingers and clothes.
Desert Cloud, like Strawberry Patch, doesn’t melt over the skin, regardless of how you mix or press.
When foiling these colors, avoid over-dampening the brush. One spritz from about a foot away from the brush should do it. If your brush is too damp, the pigment becomes watery and loses its color.
The price for these pigments has gone up from $32.50 to $34.00. You get a total of 12 grams of pigment. MAC’s normal pigments cost $20.00 and give you only 4.5 grams of product. You’re getting a great deal with the Crushed Metallic Pigment sets, though MAC will likely continue increasing the price in the near future.
