Modern, unique, sometimes unexpected color combinations of eyeshadow shades. Worn alone or together, all Duo Eyeshadow shades feature micro-fine powders that are highly pigminted, longwearing and crease resistant. Color glides on smoothly, evenly and blends effortlessly. The effects can be subtle or smoldering — the options are endless.
NARS Duo Eyeshadows include 2 eye shadow colors and come in dozens of shade combinations. The company markets its shadows as richly-pigmented and long-wearing. This review is for the duo India Song, which includes a matte vanilla and a shimmery walnut brown.
The NARS Duo Eyeshadow packaging is made of NARS’ classic rubberized black plastic and has a lid with a mirror inside that snaps shut. The outside of the packaging is a magnet for powder products, which makes it difficult to keep clean.
On the left, India Song contains a matte, cream-vanilla. On the right, it contains a medium, milk-chocolate brown with a golden sheen. The shades are very close to those in NARS’ Duo Eyeshadow in Bellissima, just inverted when it comes to the matte and shimmery finishes.
The formula for both shades is good: the powder is soft without being overly dusty or crumbly. I don’t have any problems with fall-out when applying the colors and they transfer onto the skin in an even layer.
The vanilla shade isn’t strongly pigmented, and it takes 2-3 layers for it to be noticeable on the lid. This can be a good thing if you want to use the color as a subtle highlight, but isn’t good if you’re expecting to get a strong vanilla color on the lid. The brown has strong color pay-off, but also takes 1-2 swipes to make the finish completely even. The shimmers also don’t appear as strongly as they do in the pan once the color is blending out over the skin.
These are very easy colors to wear. I use the vanilla shade for the lid and under the brow-bone and use the brown shade in the crease. Even though the brown shade has shimmer particles, they don’t show up loudly enough to preclude using the color in the crease.
Similar to my experience with the Bellissima duo, I found that the vanilla shade in this duo faded after about 4 hours of wear. I also found that, contrary to NARS’ claims, the colors don’t resist creasing. The shadows creased (even over an Urban Decay primer) after 6 hours and about 2 hours before that without a primer.
Ease of Use: 9/10
These shades apply over the skin fairly easily. The brown color does take a little friction to blend out when used in the crease. The vanilla shade will need to be layered if you’re using it on the lid. I suggest using a primer underneath to help the shadow resist creasing and retain pigmentation for longer.
For $34.00 you get 0.14 ounces (4 grams) of shadow. NARS’ single shadows cost $24.00 and contain half the amount of product, so you are getting a good deal for your money by investing in the Duos.
