Company’s Description

These light as air, whipped powder shadows glide on for a sheer wash of crease-free color with a cushiony soft feel. In 12 shades, 6 mattes and 6 metallics.

Almay’s new line of eye shadows, called Shadow Softies, come in 6 metallic and 6 matte shades. These shadows are said to be lightweight, crease-free, and give a sheer wash of color. This review is for the Shadow Softie in Smoke–a taupe with silver shimmer.

Packaging: 9/10

This eye shadow comes in a small compact made of grey plastic with a tear-drop shape and a clear lid that snaps shut and flips up.

Quality: 8.5/10

Smoke is a very cool-toned taupe with tiny silver shimmer particles. The shimmer is hard to detect even when this shade is patted onto the lids, and does not show up when this shade is used in the crease.

The Shadow Softies have a pretty traditional powder formula. The powder isn’t stiff or dry, but it also isn’t particularly soft or buttery, like the word “Softie” would suggest.

As Almay states in its description, this eye shadow gives you as sheer wash of color. You won’t get any opaque, dense layer of color out of this product. Smoke is particularly great for use in the crease because the sheer nature of the pigment gives you a smoked-out look without having to do much work. With simple application of this shade into the crease, the sheer pigmentation makes it look like you’ve spent a lot of time getting that smoky look when you haven’t.

Almay’s claim that the formula is crease-free, though, is not accurate. I found that this formula creases after about 5 hours of wear, even when applied over primer.

Ease of Use: 9/10

This shadow blends easily and applies to the skin well.

Price: 8.25/10

For under $5.00, you get 0.07 ounces (2 grams) of shadow. This is a smaller amount of product than you usually get with drugstore eye shadow singles, and is more expensive than average per ounce.

I’ve seen some pretty bad reviews for these shadows, but this one looks pretty nice… yes, the color is lighter in the swatch, but I think it would be pretty for a single shadow look… great for if you’re in a hurry, too.

I haven’t tried any of the other colors, but I can see why people would not like them. I think this one is an exception because of the smoky quality. To be fair, though, Almay does say they give a “sheer wash” of color. Some people may not have seen that.
