Kat Von D has just released 2 butterfly-inspired palettes: the Chrysalis & Monarch Eyeshadow Palettes. Each palette includes 12 eye shadow shades. This review is for the Monarch palette, which includes the following shades:
- Entomology: matte cream
- Telepathy: pearl gold
- Tiny Death: glitter cream
- Wrath: deep pearl orange
- Papilio: pearl chocolate
- Summerfly: glitter gold
- Killing Jar: pearl copper
- Delaney: pearl silver
- Vanish: matte taupe
- Disintegration: pearl brown
- Shadow Box: matte chocolate
- Deadhead: matte black
The Monarch palette is made of thick, heavy-duty, glossed cardboard. The palette stays closed via a magnet, flips open, and contains a full-length mirror inside. The outside of the palette is decorated with a butterfly design in orange and black. There are a total of 12 eye shadows inside, 3 of which are in larger pans than the other 9.
Every single one of the shades in this beautiful palette has amazing pigmentation, a smooth and even finish, and a buttery-soft formula. There are no exceptions and no duds among the 12 shades. The last 2 shades–Shadow Box and Deadhead–when swatched on the skin, show the slightest bit of patchiness, but when used on the eyes, there’s no patchy quality to them.
This palette is absolutely worth the $46.00 it costs. The set of 12 shades has a good balance of matte, satin, shimmery, and frosty finishes. And there’s a mix of cool- and warm-toned colors.
Ease of Use: 9.75/10
These shades do not need to be layered or blended in any extra capacity to get a smooth application (of course, you’ll blend them if you want them applied to the crease). The shadows have such a buttery formula that some of them produce a bit of fall-out, but that’s the only part of application that isn’t perfect.
For $46.00 you get 0.57 ounces of eye shadow. This is more product per dollar compared to Kat Von D’s other palettes.
