Company’s Description

Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm offers velvety color with balm-like moisture. Infused with a Triple Butter Complex of Shea, Mango and Coconut Butter. This retractable chubby crayon requires no sharpener.

Revlon’s new Matte Balms have been added to the ColorBurst line and come in 10 different shades. This review will be for shade #220 Showy, which is a bright orchid pink.

If you would like to see photographs and swatches of all 10 matte shades, please see this post.

Packaging: 9.75/10

The Matte Balms come in jumbo pencil form with bases that twist to reveal more product. The packaging is made of matte plastic in the color of the balm inside. The balms twist so that you don’t need to sharpen them.

Quality: 8.5/10

Showy is, without a doubt, a showy color. It’s a vibrant, orchid pink, which means it has a hint of purple thrown in. The color is rich, giving off an almost opaque layer of purple on the lips.

The texture for this matte balm is slightly powdery and those with dry lips will find they need to apply a balm or gloss on top. Compared to the other Matte Balms, this one has a more powdery and more dry texture, which means it can emphasize any dry patches you have on your lips. I found, with this shade, that even after exfoliating the lips, this pink creates a patchy finish. The balm has a light peppermint scent without making the lips tingle any significant amount.

The color has great lasting power, in part because the color is bold. After a few hours, when the balm has worn off, it leaves behind a pink stain. If you aren’t eating and drinking, or if you keep a clear gloss applied on top of this balm, the color will last you about 4 hours and will still leave a stain behind on the lips without you having to re-apply.

Ease of Use: 9.5/10

The pencil form allows you to draw onto the lips easily and fairly precisely. If you want a lighter touch of color, dab the pencil very lightly and press your lips together, or press your lips on a paper towel to remove some of the color. If you’re going to use this color at full strength, you might want to do it after moisturizing your lips to avoid the patchy finish.

Price: 9.25/10

For around $7 you get 0.095 ounce of product. Tarte’s Lip Luster Tints are $24.00 and contain 0.10 ounce each. Clinique’s Chubby Sticks are $16.00 and contain 0.10 ounce.
